Flowmaster vs Glasspack?

Default Flowmaster vs Glasspack?

Hey guys, just a quick question on the old 300 6. Just the age old question of what muffler sounds the best on one of these tractor motors without the cats. I'm not asking for a v8 sound, just which one gives the best tone. I know the straight through will be louder, but is that what i want? Ive watched some videos on this with glass packs and Super 44's and i like them both. I'd say i like the 44's more but is the extra 100$ worth it? Is there somewhere that i can get a set of used 44's? Just some thoughts i wondered if you guys had answers for. I know there is a lot of factors that go into tone and since i have 2 1/4 on there i won't be changing pipe size and I'm not going to put a set of cats on there now.

My buddy has the straight six with a 40 series flowmaster on it with exhaust out the rear. Sounds great. He does have both factory cats present however. Without cats you might find the drone through a glasspack or 44 to be very prominent inside the cab. The Super 44 is a great choice -- I've got a 50 series on mine and sometimes wonder if I should have gone with the 44. The 50 gives great tone, but won't give the adrenaline rush of a 44 or glasspack.

You need to ask yourself a few things:

1. What sort of sound are you looking for? Deep rumble with a moderate tone? Aggressive with a raspy tone?

2. Will this be a daily driver, and if so, will you become frustrated if there is a lot of engine drone while cruising/highway?

3. Is the difference in cost between the glasspack and Super 44 going to put a strain on your finances?

Double check compatibility... but here's the 44 that should fit a 2.25" on your truck for $79. Not a bad price at all....

That was a well typed response. You helped me out a bit. I don't dislike what I have now I was just wondering if the extra cost would be a waste for me. I'm not worried about drone, if its bad I just turn the radio up lol I mainly want good tone. Not trying to be that guy who wants an obnoxious truck because. If you think the 44 is a good choice I may have to spring for it in a few months.

Another thing to consider is that glasspacks will change as they get older and more used. We had some on a 350 engine in a School bus (our camper). They were quite comfortable when we first put them on and not too loud. As the years went on they got louder and almost sounded deeper. Definately turned some heads seeing a 57 school bus being loud going down the highway. Lol.

This^^^^^ Glasspacks use packing materials that will blow or burn out over time causing them to continually increase in volume and eventually become ineffective. A Flowmaster muffler does not use packing materials and will maintain its tone and sound control for the life of the product.

Just realized I was hitting thanks and not the quote button... anyway I have cut the cats off and I have a Flowmaster super 50 series with a 3 in inlet and 2x2.5 in outlets and it comes back and dumps just over the real axle and I love the way it sounds....

That sounds hilarious! Yea I've heard that before. I can tell the difference now from 3-4 months. That's another thing I'm worried about. As time goes on i know i will have to change it to avoid being pulled over every day. I was gonna give the 44's a try i guess since they will last longer and change is good. The glasspack may flow better, according to an old test I read in Car Craft, but you can still talk at a normal volume in the cab with a Flowmaster 40. My wife liked the 40 series better, chicks like talking. The flowmaster was deep and growly , the walker glaspack was very buzzy, I never noticed a power difference.

That's kinda what i thought. The buzz is kinda weird and i thought it was just the i6, and it very well could be that but if i still have it with a flow master it won't matter that much. Not like i downgraded.

Interesting... I've got the two stock cats followed by the 50 series delta flow. I chose the delta flow to avoid drone but like most things truck-related, I find myself wanting more. I've noticed on these trucks (might just be my experience) that there tends to be a very 'airy' sound to the engine/exhaust. You get almost as much 'wooshy air' noise from the front engine bay as you would from the exhaust. Never really liked that... but I just assume it is a characteristic of this engine. Any thoughts?

I live in a state that doesn't do emissions testing, but I may move to TN at some point and want to retain at least the look of the cat. I wonder what it would be like to gut the second cat and run a pipe through it? Maintain the look but increase the tone? Wonder if it would throw a code...
