Default Few engine mod questions

So id like to do some engine mods heres the list:

K and N filter (which one, and where is cheapest?)
Timing bump to 16 degrees
New coil
New rotor/cap

My friends dad is a mechanic and told me hed do the timing bump. How much is reasonable to pay him?

What k and filter do i need and where is the cheapest place to buy it?

Wheres the best place to buy a coil and cap? What ones should i get, and will they make any difference? Theyre easy to change out right? My truck is all stock with 178k sodo you guyts think the stock parts are worn out

use the drop in K&N filter in the stock box....

you can get everything you need at Advance Auto... or you can order it online at Rockauto.com

Make sure you use a timing light for the bump, much more precise than by hand or ear as some people do it, and re-gap your plugs accordingly. You can do all this with the stock ignition. Throttle response and economy will be a definite improvement

Also for the filter, you can either go the drop in like i had before, or make the kit like i did. Didn't feel like paying 200$ for the bracket and filter so i made mine for under 50$ with some ABS piping and a ractive air filter i found for 25$. I just keep it clean and oiled, check my throttle body every once in a while and its always clean.

Works the same way, some ABS piping to make adapters and all you need it the filter, so you save about 100$ without all the hardware. Some parts stores will have universal KN filters in stock so you just need to find one thats close to what you need.

could i use a spectre filter from autozone?

my friends dad just said hell do a tiing bump for $20 with his light so ill do that, make my own intake and do the ignition, then find a way to replace my cat with a highflow cat.

If i replaced it with a normal cat would make any performance or sound difference just because mmine is oem and has 178k on it?

Yup those will do, the only real difference between the filters is the brand same. Its basically the same filter material, just keep it clean. And the high flow cat will help with exhaust flow and emissions since probably after 178k, the stock one gets too hot and wont be doing a whole lot of good, probably got some junk inside of it too thats restricting exhaust.
