Default F-150's sputtering/stuttering problem

I have a 1990 F150 4x4 XLT Lariat automatic with the 302 in it and it has a sputtering problem that I wanted to see if anyone could help me out with. When I'm on anywhere from a slow incline to a steeper hill the truck basically sputters intermittently until it downshifts to compensate for the loss of power. From what I understand (and correct me if I'm wrong on this) the problem could either be stemming from the fuel pressure regulator, the fuel filter, the fuel pump. I read somewhere online that if I connect a fuel pressure gauge I can just compare it to what the pressure is supposed to be at, right? Somewhere between 30-45 psi? If the pressure is too low it's apparently the filter or the pump, while if it's too high, then it's the FPR? Is this all correct? Is the fuel system the only thing I should be analyzing, or is there something else? Thanks for your time, and help. You can ask me any questions about the problem that I have not mentioned.

Well, I'm glad that the tune-up did the trick for you; unfortunately, since I did one less than a year ago, I doubt that's the cause of my issue. I still think it's a fuel pressure issue, but thanks to this thread, I can check the error codes now and see if I can narrow it down.

Yeah I checked the error codes and didn't get anything, so that's good! Let me know what you get
