Did this gear also include a two wire VSS sensor or just the gear?

Either way good job finding the issue as the VSS sensor tells the ECU the shaft speed against the one in the rearend to get the trans to shift at the right moment to pip signals.....

No, the EEC does not use both. From '89-91, the EEC only used the VSS on the trans/t-case for E4OD shift management. From '92-96, it only used the PSOM output (also called VSS), which was based on the ABS sensor on the rear diff. Only the '94-96 4R70W has an OSS which the EEC uses in addition to the PSOM output.
