Engine Putback after long storage
Good morning my fellow F150 Enthusiasts. I have a quick question and it should be pretty simple. I have a 89F150 Lariat that I am trying to get back road ready. I am not doing a "total" restoration, but but I am cleaning and replacing parts where necessary. I have a parts truck (1992 Ford F150 Lariat) that i am using also a guide as i put my engine parts back together. It runs and I pretty much know most of the defects, so i an not really hard for parts. I could go on with what I have done so far, but I am focusing on the engine. Speaking of, I have an engine that i took down to the block, to replace the previous block that cracked during a major freeze storm. I have not replaced the pistons, cams, bearings or anything internal. I simply cleaned the reminaing parts and reinstalled the heads, oil pan and lower manifold. Like i said, I am not looking to rebuild the heads and machine the block and what not at this point, I just simply want to get the truck back on the road. I can remove the block (engine) from the '92 and have all the machine work done if i want (which i am thinking about it if i can get it out). I said all of that to get to the main concern. The engine I am working on was started about 5 years ago. I had replaced all the gaskets with new ones (Felpro) when installing the heads, lower manifold, and oil pan. Unfortunately, i could not finish the put back and had to put it in storage for about 3 of the 5 years. Then i got it out of storage and put it on an engine stand. It sat outside (covered for the most part), since I don't have a covered or enclosed storage location to store it. It has been this way for the last 2 years or so. Now I am ready to complete the put back. My concern is the gaskets that have already been installed. Do you think they will stand up to the reminaing put back together, or should i just take it apart to the block and install new gaskets, considering i may have to purchase some gaskets anyway? I know this was a long post for a simple question, but i wanted you to know the full contex. Thanks in advance. :afro:
If properly installed, the gaskets that are already in there should be fine. If you disassemble something you already installed a new gasket with, then yes, get new ones in there for reassembly. Since its been sitting outside, I would pull the spark plugs and scope the bores to see how they look for sitting. If they look OK, I'd get some oil in the cylinders and rotate the engine a couple times. If possible, it cant hurt to do a compression test on the stand to give you an idea of engine health.
