Default Engine Hassle

I have a 1990 ford f150 with the 5.0, 145,000 miles. Need help on two issues... First, truck runs good, but occasionally when I come to a stop, it will go dead and engine light comes on. It will crank right back up and may not do it again the rest of the day! (also, engine light goes off after about 15 seconds). Second, once in a while in Overdrive, you will be going along and all of a sudden a "lurch", and the engine light comes on also. It may stay on a while then eventually goes off and truck resumes running fine. I believe these are two different issues and wonder if you guys have an opinion? Since it's hit and miss, hard to take it to a mechanic and say "fix it". Actually, I would rather fix it myself anyway..

Thanks for any suggestions..

Have you checked for stored codes? Its not hard to do on the older Fords without any special equipment. Search for Ford EEC-IV codes.

Put a fuel pressure gauge on it where you can see (NOT WATCH) it while driving, and read codes.

You should put ALL the truck's details & history (as much as you know) into your signature so it shows with each post, as this page explains:

Phone apps don't always show signatures, so you may need to switch to a real browser in desktop mode on your phone, or just use a desktop/laptop computer. Put your location (nearest city) in your profile & upload an avatar of the truck. The more pics you post of the truck, engine, wiring, labels, & undercarriage, the more likely we can help you. Not all its details are relevant to these issues, but you don't necessarily know which ones are relevant, so just put everything in now.
