I'm glad someone understands the EGR stuff!

I would guess 13-15 depending on how heavy your foot is. If the EGR is screwing up, it'll ruin your mileage.

I'd also see if you can make some headway on the other stuff before replacing an O2 sensor that might be good. I've already suffered through that, for no apparent reason but to drive myself insane...

About the EGR, I've got an exhaust leak in the air tube going to the cat, so I'm going to fix that before I dig into the EGR more. The parts are currently on order. I already read the first 10 pages of the egr thread. I feel I understand the functionality of that system a lot better now.

I don't think I need to worry about carbon buildup yet because my engine only has about 300 miles on a rebuild. I have no clue when the o2 sensor was ever changed, should I replace it even without a code? What kind of MPG should I be getting? is 15 mpg highway reasonable for a 5.8L truck? I'm nowhere near that now.
The adjustable ones have oblong holes where the mount screws go through, allowing a slight rotation left and right of center. The tube leak would cause ECC to compensate w/ increased fuel. The tube leak, The ECC could mistake for the EGR not closing completely. Also engines always get less MPG during breakin period. Your running breaking oil right? When you change it, go synthetic w/an extended range filter & 1 qt. of Lucas Synth. Oil Stabilizer which enhances top end dry start protection. If you don/t decide to replace the O2 sensor, remove it, douche the probe w/ Electronic contact cleaner and reinstall. After the tube is fixed, TPS in & O2 sensor cleaned or replaced, disconnect battery for at least 20 mins. In addition to clearing continuous memory error codes, this will also reset the KAM & rebuild its adaptive strategy learn table. When you restart, as Idle settles in put your foot on the brake and place shifter in drive while at idle for 2 mins.Turn engine off for a minute, then restart and let idle in park for 2 mins. then off a minute. then go for a drive, and hold steady at various RPM's for about 10 mins.total. You might think I'm pulling you leg and that now is where I tell you that you just learned the F-150 Hokey Pokey but I type w/ my left & right Index fingers only and that would have lost any humor to me about 100 + words ago!

Interesting. I'll give that a try when I get the leak fixed. I'll go ahead and swap the o2 sensor in. I'm so far in the hole with this truck by now that another $40 won't make any difference I took the truck to a shop to get the leak fixed because I'm running out of time and wanted to change the transmission fluid and install an aux cooler instead of messing with the exhaust. They had to order parts which should be in on Monday.

I'm using traditional oil right now, was thinking of sticking with that for the first oil change, on the 2nd I will switch to synthetic.

My truck will get a good break in here shortly, in 4 days I'm going on the road with my 28' trailer. I'll be driving 600 miles with it.

wasup? stopped by to see how your doing also I was thinking about the advice on switchto synthetic on the change and thought about it a little more. and my 87' 302 has 180k but 20k since engine & tranny rebuilt .usually I qualify my statements by noteing that I did whatever and had whatever results or that i heard something does or doesnt work.I switched all my fluids to Synth. After a flush like TransTune wich you add to the fluid a day or two prior to change flushes all the sludge and old scorched residue and holds it in suspension for draining Transmission the increased flow, w synth fluid replacement seems to drop tranny temp about 20 F Don't forget the Tourque converter holdsabout 5 + qts.Anyway,I agree with you on sticking with regular oil on the first change. There has to be a certain amount of friction for the rings to seat. I ran across some interesting info on obd1 today. basicly some error codes remain in contin. memory even after repair some for 40 warmup cycles and others 80! To clear them (#33) CleartheKAM.

This weekend I spent quite a few hours working on the truck. I pulled the transmission valve body and installed a B&M shift improver kit, that made a huge difference in shift points and speed, I don't suggest it on a daily driver, but for hauling it's going to be great. I had to run back to the store, I only had 9 quarts of transmission fluid and it took 13 to fill it back up. I also installed a huge transmission cooler which probably added 1 quart of volume to the system.

I also checked my engine oil and found some solids in it, so I changed it. It only had 300 miles on it and the oil itself was clean, but it had what looked like carbon buildup suspended in it, so I threw on a new filter and changed the oil. There's still some floating stuff in the new oil, but it's a lot less, I'll change it again in 600 miles or so just to be safe. I don't want to kill my new engine. The solids were soft to the touch and would crumble when I smeared it between my fingers.

I also changed the oxygen sensor, it went very well, I broke down and bought a o2 sensor wrench because of Alien's experiences in the EGR thread, but it came out with very little effort, for which I was happy.

Today or tomorrow the truck is getting the exhaust leak fixed at a shop since I'm now out of time, I'll get them to change the transfer case and differential fluids while they have it. My travel date got moved from next weekend to this Wed, so I've only got 2 days to get everything ready.

Sounds like your luck (and your truck) is running a whole lot better than mine!
