Default E4od trouble

My 92 with a 302 stays in first gear in drive. If i put it in 1 and shift to 2,it does it fine. But when i throw it to drive, it goes back to first. Just rebuilt the trans and all fuses are good as well as connections. Or so it seems. What could be up?

Manual lever position sensor. AKA Neutral Safety Switch. Sensor is mounted on the side of the tranny and bridges the shift linkage.
