ive seen this problem alot on this site and ive only been a member for 60 seconds, plain and simple the problem is in the lock up torque converter, all e40d's came with a lockup sort of works like a gear splitter, when working properly you will fill light "shifts" between each actual gear, when i installed the cut out switch on mine i immediately had a hard shift from 1st to 2nd,. Some people just cut the wire to the lockup others actually installed a switch to turn it on and off, and other people just changed the torque converter to one without a lockup, but either way this feature has been tampered with in most of these trucks that i have seen. and any time you screw with this it will leave the computer attempting to engage the lockup thus causing this "hard shift" been driving mine like that for a year and absolutely no damage, also remember when servicing these trannys you change the fluid in the torque converter as well, pan and TC hold something like 9 or 10 quarts
