Question E4OD shift problems

Alright, I've looked through a number of other posts but I can't find anyone who has trans issues similar to mine. I have a 95 2WD 5.8L with the E4OD trans.

The first issue is when it is cold, it takes a while to shift into overdrive. Once it warms up (not even all the way to normal operating temp) it shifts fine.

The second thing, just started a few weeks ago. When I'm cruising in overdrive, it has trouble downshifting when I step on the accelerator like when passing. It tries to shift but just slams back into overdrive really quick. It actually feels like a bad shift shock like you get when you have bad u-joints. No tire chirp or anything. The thing is when I push the "overdrive off" button on the end of the shift lever, it downshifts fine and away I go.

I have been wanting to do a tune up but have been putting it off but I doubt that will help me out at all. It has been running a little rougher lately, especially when it is cold. The other thing is that I have been doing a lot of freeway driving the last month or so due to an internship for school that is a bit of a drive from my house (thank God I get paid for it because it's costing me about $200 a month in gas!).

Anyway, I wanted to take it to a trans shop but since this is a computer controlled trans I though someone might be able to point me to a sensor or something that might be bad. I really don't think it is anything mechanical with the trans but I could be wrong (let hope not!). Thanks!

I can't remember if Ford has a temp lockout for overdrive. I know that the others do on some of their trannies so it is a possibility. Does you speedo work correctly. You should be able to get the codes if any from the transmission to see if it was a sensor or not.

You'll have to elaborate on what a temp lockout is, I'm not familiar with that at all. My speedo does work like it should. I had some trouble with it in the past, but I replaced the wire coming down from the main harness to the VSS in the rear diff and that fixed the jumping speedo problem. I posted it on this site here:

Also I have another post open because I did a tune up and it's not running right. I pulled the codes out for that and they are posted here:

Thanks man!

With the computer controlled chevy and Dodge they will not shift into OD or lockup untill the tranny reaches a temp of around 160 degrees.
