Ya never know sometimes. Few people ever go to the trouble of doing a compression w/ bleed down test before they buy. You would have known about the valves going in.

the valves I am ok with, not to big of a deal to get a puff of smoke out of tail pipe on an old beater lol, but foam in the oil is makes me say

I wouldn't give up yet. Like I said, do a compression check and I'd get another opinion.

Wondering if a crack/ warpage was misdiagnosed as a gasket failure?

A valve job is removing the cylinder head(s) from the engine so the valves, guides and seats can be refurbished. Is it that mush of a stretch to do the rings at the same time for a high milage engine?

I Googled "head job". Oh my!
