Distributor Problems --- Heads Up
Ok, for all shade tree mechanics:
-- The last thing most of us look for is a bad distributor, but I just came across one recently.
Scenario: 5.0L Ford, not starting
Replaced spark plug wires, plugs, rotor, cap and all filters. Ran codes --- nothing reported. Fuel pressure good.
Troubleshot for 2 hrs ---ended up pulling the distributor and replaced with rebuilt
Fired right up
Lesson learned: never rule out anything

You can replace the PIP sensor rather than the whole distributor but it tends to not be worth the extra pain & suffering to save the few extra dollars. A whole new distributor over replacement of a component even feels like a better idea. Even w/a new PIP sensor the distributor still would have had wear into it's tolerances.
