distributor gears
Hello to all, wondering if someone could help me out.I am swapping in a 1992 5.8 out of a f150 into my 1990 f150 which also had the 5.8.I have to swap out the distributors. They both had the cast gears and the one on the original dist was broken.when I was removing the gear from the 92 dist I broke a tooth. The local auto parts store seems to be having trouble finding me the proper gear and the internet seems to vary on what gear as well.I think it should be cast, but how many different ones are there?Dont want to ruin my new engine. Thanks in advance.
There's a cast one and a machined one. Cams from 302 and 351 are interchangeable as I understand it so there should only be the 2 possibilities - cast for flat tappet and machined for roller cam.
ok,thanks.it looks like both gears were cast.and they do look the same from what I can tell. There are just so many to choose from online and some don't make sense at all.The store ordered me the wrong one already,(Completely different size)and they ordered me another to which I helped pick by application size etc.I guess if it looks ok it should be fine?Does anyone know if there are different pitches etc that could be a factor?or am I being overcautious? Thanks again.
Ok well I believe the cams are interchangeable between 302 and 351. People are swapping cams all over the place in these motors. Other than having the right gear for flat tappet or roller, nobody's ever saying "this cam takes that dist gear and that one takes a different one".
