distributor cap and rotor question
sounds simple enough....that is what I thought when I bought new parts to tune up my 88 F150 w/5.0. first off, the plug wires they gave me are way long but the worst part is the new rotor is different then the one in the truck, it has 2 screws that hold it in place and is round compared to the one in it that pushes into place and has a plastic "ear" so that it goes on only one way. I live in the middle of nowhere and am stuck now. How many types of caps and rotors are there for this application? anyone know what they may be as I gave them all the info they asked for. i am going to try the old rotor in the new cap tomorrow as it got dark on me tonight, hope it works till Monday when I can drive down to auto parts and get "right" parts, whatever that may be????>?> thanks
Sow, there is only one type of cap and rotor for your truck. Sounds like all the parts are wrong. I wouldn't change the cap or wires because they are likely wrong as well. However, when you get the correct parts and you go to install the wires, remember to separate #7 & 8 plug wires so as they are not next to each other in the wire separator or you may experience induction crossfire (spark knock or detonation). My first truck ('93 F150 5.0) burnt a hole in #8 piston because of that. The firing order is 15426378 counter-clockwise on the cap. The correct replacement cap should have a number 1 raised on it (this marks the location of cylinder 1) Good luck.
