Default Dead Fuel Pump

My fuel pump crapped out today.. Thought i'd run the poor thing outta gas, flipped the switch and started on my back tank. Well I stopped to fill it up and only took 13 on the front and 5.5 on the back,....

I flipped over to the front, it starts, runs rough and then craps out. Grrr.... Flip over to back tank and starts just fine... I hear zero fuel pump noise from the front pump (but pump was never noisy to begin with, like alot of Fords I am accustom to)..I am presuming it the fuel pump, as the back tank works fine (gonna check fuel pressure on both anyway.. Given age, it maybe weak)

My question: Before I go drain 17 gallons of gas outta the tank (and taking the bed off is a PITA because of my camper shell) and drop the tank, anything else I should check for??

Also, should I drop both tanks and replace both pumps at once? Or am I just being overly paranoid

And, i see like 5 pumps listed under the motorcraft brand on Rock Auto..I also see just two listed under the delphi brand.. I plan to replace them with delphi pumps, but any one know for sure if the delphi pump shown on rock auto is correct? Hate to order and have it here and it be wrong?

Thanks

To add: I am getting my guages rebuilt, but, on both tanks, the gas needle bounces a fair amount on the gyage.. I am thinking its the guage issue, but wondering if its not a gauge issue now

I've got a 89 and my front tank is doing the same as yours. I haven't fixed mine yet so I can't help you.

You can test the pumps individually with a pressure gauge. Then make sure the failed pump is getting power and ground when activated. You can even try hot wiring it to see if the pump works before you replace it. You would be fine to do just the faulty pump however if you have the money and you are already dropping tanks, I am a believer in proactive preventative maintenance. Meaning it couldn't hurt.

I tried the banging on the tank didn't help.. I have never heard a Ford Fuel pump die quietly. EVER!

I am having some health issues and I need it fixed, while I get fixed, so I broke down and took it in to my mechanic friend... WE shall see

I guess a lot of guys don't know there are fairly significant differences from 1990 and up. It helps to know the year of the truck.
