Daily Log of cold start issues
I figured if I summarized my issues it could possibly help me with a solution or help somebody else. This seems to be an extremely common issue with the 5.0 motor. There are threads all over the web about it but virtually no solutions.
1995 5.0 2wd auto. This motor runs absolutely fantastic.
New plugs, wires, cap, rotor, pcv valve, air filter, oil and oil filter, fuel filter, new IACV, throttle body seafoamed. The check engine light is not on and there are no codes.
15 degrees out. Cold starts immediately, check engine light flashes 3 times, truck stalls soon after (15 seconds). Restart and its good from then on.
25 degrees out. Cold starts immediately, check engine light flashes 3 times, truck stalls soon after (between 15 and 40 seconds). Restart and its good from then on.
36 degrees out. Cold starts immediately, Fast idles between 15 and 40 seconds, check engine light flashes 3 times and the rpms drop to just about a stall condition but it catches itself and idle picks back up. Its good from then on.
45 degrees or warmer out. Cold starts immediately, truck stalls 15 and 40 seconds later. Restart and its good from then on.
Once the engine is warm the check engine light no longer flashes at start up and there is no stall condition.
This has to be some kind of a command issue. Its methodical and predictable.

I may be barking at the moon but I believe your truck has a cold start injecter that injects extra fuel into the manifold depending on engine temp and the temp sensor could bad or disconected.or the injecter could be bad
I am thinking it could possibly be the TPS but wouldn't that throw a code too? If the TPS was easy to change I would just get a new one and see what happens but its a pain. I read the entire throttle body needs to be removed. Thats not that bad ini normal conditions but I would have to do it in 15 degree weather in the dark with a drop light.
Its not a slow stall. Its a quick stall like I pulled the coil wire off. The idle just drops like a rock and it stalls. Like I said in my first post, if the temperature is warm it sometimes catches itself right before its ready to stall the idle picks back up.

This is certainly a documented problem with the 5.0 motor. Check out this thread from a different forum I found. These guys have the exact same problem I am having. The original poster got so frustrated he sold the truck. http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/10...t-startup.html
I might as well continue on with my log.
This morning. 40 degrees out. Cold start, no check engine light, no stall.
This afternoon, 40 degrees out. Cold start, no check engine light, no stall.
15 minutes later. 40 degrees out. Truck starts, check engine light flashes once, idle increases, idle drops back down to normal, no issues after that.

it sounds like a temp sensor is out or something. i really hope i dont have this problem with my 5.0 if there isn't really a known way to fix it... hopefully since mine is OBDII it will tell me more then what yours is.
but yea thats all i can really think of, a bad temp sensor.
look into a "cold start sensor"

Another addition to the log...
This morning. Outside temp 35 degrees.
Cold started instantly, no check engine light flashing, no "almost stall"
Fast idled for a while, kicked down by itself and ran perfect all the way to the train station.
I am starting to think I may have a tank of old or bad gas. I put some fresh gas in before I got home last night and there is some seafoam in the tank.

another update
this morning.. 40 degrees out. cold start instantly, no check engine light no stall, no issues.
cold start this afternoon, 25 degrees out. cold start instanly, check engine light flashed 3 times, truck stalled. refired instantly and it was fine.
this is a definate pattern and its temperature related.
