Custom Cam & Install
I've probably posted something like this before, but can't find anything. I have a 1994 Ford F-150 RCSB with a 5.0L & an AOD(I think..). Motor was rebuilt about 12k ago, bored out .030 over, speedpro ally pistons, & GT-40p heads. I did not install a cam at the time(silly me). I want to put one in though a few years later. I have seen a lot of folks saying "I would run a custom cam in mine", but I don't really know what that is. I want the truck to be drivable on the street as a daily but have more power & go. So can someone please help with with a "custom cam" & what all goes with that? Also need to know if I have to do lifters, push rods, what's the break in procedure, how to install(do heads need to come off, can I port & polish GT-40p's or is it not worth it, how much of the motor needs to come apart). I am mechanically minded but have just never done a cam before. Thanks in advance for the help!
Go with a Comp 35-512-8, many forum members run this cam, myself included. Fantastic upgrade for our trucks. As a plus you can use all existing valve train hardware, lifters, pushrods and rockers. Don't have to worry about break in with these roller cams.
Edit. Not much to be gained in lower rpm with port and polish of the heads. Heads don't come off with a cam swap, just intake manifold and down to timing cover on the front. Shouldn't be too bad with a newer engine like you have. Don't need to remove alt/air pump bracket just the power steering/ac bracket.
