There's almost no way this can be right, but after changing the O2 sensor last night, the truck is running much better. No more no start (today at least) and no barely running then dying. It makes no since at all since it would be in open loop at start up, but who knows. The only other thing I did was take the misfire sensor off to test it. Maybe the harness was a little loose and all it took was me popping it off and put it back on. But, does the misfire sensor control anything or is it just a monitor?
That's what I thought. What does the computer use to monitor the engine speed? I'm having timing advance issues also, and it uses engine speed, calculated vacuum, and EGR flow rate to determine the amount of advance.

Sorry I was wrong( for whatever reason I was thinking cam sensor which there is none), it should also give you engine speed, because it senses every time the crank is turned over, and senses a misfire when the crank is at a certain position and if a miss happens, the crank will slow down enough for the sensor to pick it up. But your timing issue could also be your ICM if you just cant seem to get your timing right, but remember to pull the spout plug if changing it.

The base timing is perfect at 10 degrees. The advance is where I'm having the trouble. At idle it stays at 10 +/- 2. If I hammer down on the gas, it goes anywhere from 2 to 9 degrees. If I let off the gas, it goes up to 20-30.

Having any issues with your knock sensor? Even a bad EGR can do that if its ping is bad.
The only check I've done for the EGR is to see if it would open and hold with vacuum pressure. It checked out there and it looks newer than everything else, so I assume it's been replaced at some point. I can't find any knock sensors on the parts stores websites. If I'm thinking right, it's just below the coil pack and to the right, right? Know of anywhere I can get one if it doesn't check out good?
