Default Crankcase over fill

I've havent put the full six quarts of oil in my 1996 351 since the first oil change. Had to drain out nearly 1/2 a qt. to bring down to the full line. A friend with an F150 was told he had to use the full 6 qts. or damage would occur. He uses the same short filter I have to use. Since the first oil change, I fill the filter the amount that wont run out while turning it on usually about 12 oz. and save the rest of that bottle, then dump 5 qts in the crank case bringing it up almost perfect with the full mark after its been run a few minutes. I say its in the filter capacity and not what the owners manual says to dump in the crankcase. Whats some opinions about this situation.
Thanks to anyone offering direction about this issue.

I'd just run 6qts...a pint of oil isnt enough to hurt anything even if it's overfull. Which it isn't...all the small blocks took 6. Prob just yer dipstick got stamped wrong. Unless the pans piled up with sludge. But that's a lotta sludge.

Thanks farmer 12. I'll put the rest of the first bottle in. I wasn't too concerned about sludge since the oil has always been synthetic and changed around 3,000-4,000 miles w/ filter.
