Default Computer confusion

I'm chasing down a computer/ecu for a friend with an '87 F150 5.0 AOD 2WD. I'm finding many that say they will work. A few of the vendors say they need the part number right off the computer, they say the VIN is not enough.

Most have a part number that looks like xxxx-12a650-xxxx.

My question is, will any computer from an '87 F150 5.0 AOD 2WD work? Or do the part numbers on the computer have to exactly match up?

Yes, and many others.

No.

The EEC controls the engine (which could be 4.9L, 5.0L, 5.8L, or 7.5L in heavier trucks) and possibly the transmission (E4OD or 4R70W in later years). For each engine, there could be several calibrations for various years, air meters (MAP or MAF), climates, or local regulations (CARB). So the one that came with that specific truck is very specific. But since any 5.0L MAP engine with any non-electronic transmission (AOD, C6, or stickshift) can be controlled by any 5.0L MAP EEC (even one built to control an electronic trans), there are many that will make that truck run. But NOT all.

Chassis weight (F150-350) and drive system (2-/4WD) are irrelevant, other than trucks >8500GVWR having less-strict emissions requirements, and thus, different calibrations.

And just to be clear, the AOD tranny (14 bolt) is not electronically controlled whereas the E4OD is. Do I have that right?

I've never owned a motorcycle, and I've never ridden a GoldWing.

The AOD is controlled by its TV cable; the E in E4OD means "electronic".

Somebody on a Goldwing forum is using your handle. Reads like he knows his stuff too.

Thank you for the info Steve83.
