Hey guys,

I was getting ready to order components for the ignition upgrade, but I'm stumped when I look at the choices for the MSD coils on Summit's website.

On the FSB how-to, the writer uses an MSD 8227 coil, listed with these specs: http://www.msdignition.com/product.aspx?id=5065

However, the primary resistance (.68 ohms) and maximum voltage (44,000V) disagree with the information in this thread: https://www.f150forum.com/f10/about-...ng-bump-53159/

When I look at the MSD 5527 Street Fire coil here: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MSD-5527/, it looks like this one will agree with the information in the above thread (.44 ohms and 48,000V).

Did MSD change model numbers recently, and has anyone used the 5527 with success?

 

Another quick question. Has anyone else other than sewiv had to use a Lightning 5.8 HO set of Taylor wires due to the 5.0 wires being too long? Will the coil wire still fit even though it's not an HEI-type plug?

 

there is an Accel brand one on summitracing.com that is the lowest ohm.

 

I was looking at using the Taylor Thundervolt 8.2s, which i think have a 50 ohm resistance per foot. I'll have to check on those ACCELs.

Edit: checked for a vehicle specific set of ACCEL plug wires, but the lowest offered was 300 ohm I think. On ACCEL's site, however, the Pro-25 wires advertise a 25 ohm resistance. Are people just using universal sets of Pro-25s?

 

Taylor Thundervolt 8.2s are good. use either those or the pricier MSD 8.5 Superconductors. stock Motorcraft copper core plugs, the cheapies! gap em to .054 and adjust, some have done .060. Brass cap and rotor.

 

got the brass cap and rotor from MSD, threw it on a few weeks ago. Might go ahead and get the ACCEL coil (48k V, .22 ohm, 132:1 turn ratio) and the Taylor 8.2s. Can't wait to get a little more power

 

sounds like a plan. have fun with it, advance the timing a bit, try 14btdc and go down if it pings. that'll help that bigger gap and spark do its thing. stay with 87 octane.
