Default Clank in the rear end.

Hey guys, i just bought my first truck. everything mechanically works great, the only thing that doesnt seem right is a clank in the rear end. i have already replaced all the ujoints to no avail. I put the truck in neutral and took a look under neath, and there apears to be play in the differential. is this normal on an old 1992 vehicle? Should i keep the truck parked until i fix this?

Thanks in advance!!

sounds like your pinion bearing is shot. grab your drive shaft and check for movement up and down at the pinion.

Alberta, i checked the pinion bearing and i dont believe that is the problem, as there is no up and down play. it is all rotational

thats good! did you do the same thing to the other end of the drive shaft to check for up and down movement at your trans/transfercase?

yes i did. the play is only rotational, and i believe it all comes from the differential.
