Default Check engine

Hi everyone. I'm really hoping someone can point me in the right direction here. I have a 4wd 96 F-150 4.9 I6. My tabs expired and my check engine light came on so I took it to an AutoZone and when they hooked the OBD1 the readout said it is unable to get any code from the brain. The technician said the brain is fine but something behind it is the problem. So I did the obvious things like checked all fuses, checked for wires and connections, but ask that stuff seems good. Does anyone have any ideas what the problem or where the problem is???

Well my first thought is that it is 96 so it is probably OBDII

If it really is OBDI then you will have a connector under the hood near the firewall on the driver's side, and there is a sticky at the top of this page that will tell you how to pull your codes.

96 is definitely OBD 2. That was the year of the federal mandate that all vehicles had to use the same management system.

Yes. My bad it's OBD2, but the prob remains the same. Any advice or thoughts on solutions? Also I didn't mention this because it seems irrelevant, but my hazards started freezing sometimes, or would speed up or slow down right after the check engine light came on. Both probs occurred around the same time. I'd that just coincidence?
