Default cheap rust repair

there are some rust wholes on the fenders on the box of my 87. i dont want to do some major expensive repair job. i want to fill in the rust and prevent new rust so it least ooks good from a distance i want the truck to last a while with all the money im putting into it so i am going to be as cheap as i possibly can. i plan on getting body filler and just filling it in and smoothing it out then paint it with some galvinized primer than spary with some rubberized coating i got at tsc and just spray some cheap red paint that i got clearenced there over top to at least make it look better. do i have to add anything to the filler or do i just spread and paint. if there is going to be any more steps to putting with the filler ill go with my first plan and forget the filler and just paint it like i planned. i dont need it to look perfect but i just dont want to look at the rust holes. bad painting and uneveness doesnt bother me its an old truck i just want to get some good yrs out of it. thanks for your help

Make sure to cut out rusty metal first, or it will fail next to immediately (or sooner)

^x2 as much as you can. i did this not too long ago with my truck. being a first timer the bondo didnt look very pretty (and some spots still dont) it took alot of sanding for me. depending on the size of the hole you want to patch, autozone carries small metal mesh patches that you can use to cover the hole to give the bondo something to adhere to. do a good job prepping and make sure you take your time.

so replace the metal. that i didnt want to do because i was sure it would never get finished. it hasnt rusted anymore than it already was though. last summer i sanded it with a wire brush on a drill and glavinized primered it and it hasnt rusted at all yet. what would cause it to start rusting so quick

i didnt mean replace the metal totally. the patches i meant are like 8 bucks for 2 of em and they're about a 5 inch square. enough to cover a small hole or a few small ones. there could have been moisture that got into the primer before it set totally or something simple like that.

oh ok. holes that small you should just be able to bondo over and sand down. i understand cheap lol. i should have replaced my cab corners, but i just cut out the rust. filled it with foam. then bondo'd the ever living sh*t out of it hahaha. whole thing cost me maybe 70 bucks. with foam, bondo, and spray on bed liner. lol

Ya my corners are still solid yet which is good. Although my dad should have put one is the dside but its too far gone now. He wedgs some blocks of wood between the cab and the box but they call out. Im glad mine are still solid they look like a pain to fix.
