Default Chalky oxidation

I just picked up an 88 F150 that has some extreme oxidation and tiny rust spots all over the truck. Im not looking to make it blink again but i would like it to not get chalk all over everything every time i brush up against it or work on it. What can i do?It feel pointless to go through the whole rubbing compound, polish and the was thing if its got rust.

Also, i did the canned spray in bed liner in the tub of my jeep and its held up really really good. Id like to spray it in the bed of the truck but what are the chances of it sticking to the oxidation and rust? Im not looking to spend a lot of money or time if possible, but i would like to get this truck half decent looking and put it back to work.

The chalky stuff is probably road salt from the deicers used on the highways.

clay, and wax if you want simple, should keep some of the chalk down.
you should really do a 3-step Megs kit even though it is some work.

Need to sand the bed some to remove most of the rust for the spray liner

I power washed it today and 20 years of dirt fell off of it. It looks completly different. Still very very chalky but now its clean chalk. It also exposed alot of rusty scratches and knicks all over the truck. Ill probably give the whole truck a good sanding and grey or black primer it with a rattle can and maybe wetsand it woth no real plans to paint it. Im not really a fan of the look but its probably better than the chalk/rust. I have no experience with painting whatsoever so i dont know if this makes any sense.
