Default Cam selection comparison. Your thoughts please

Creb Engineering is in process of building me a 347 short block for my 94 F150 SWB 2WD with mass air. I'll be using stock intake with 1.6 roller rockers. I've asked him to recommend a cam for the truck. His recommendation is the 35-351-8. Based on what I've read here I was thinking the 35-510-8 would be a good choice. When I mentioned to him I was looking to maximize torque in the low rpm range he said I would have plenty with the larger displacement and longer stroke. I know nothing about cam profiles. Those that do, please take a look at the specs on these cams and let me know what you think or even another cam. All input and suggestions are welcome.

Go with a custom cam. You'll get the most out of your build that way.

I'm at the point in the build where I have to make a selection now. I just want to go with an off the shelf cam that is the best choice for the truck. I would greatly appreciate your opinion on what you think that would be.

Perhaps I have missed it, but what heads on this fire-breathing stroked 347 with a stock intake? Stock E7's? What transmission? If auto does it have a stock or aftermarket convertor? What rear gears? What is the intended usage? Towing? Heavy hauling? Cruising around town? Daily driver? Mostly highway? Drag truck?

You are going to need a good flowing set of heads in in conjunction with that camshaft you are asking about in order to get good results. No one is going to be able to tell you what cam is best with the limited information that you have provided. Although anyone can make a wild *** guess. To understand what is needed get on one of the camshaft suppliers sited and look at all of the vehicle information input required before they will offer guidance.

It sounds like you are going to have a mis-matched parts combination as all of these parts need to work together for best results. Usually that means disappointment with the final outcome and a lot more money spent to rectify it. Many lose interest at that stage.

Maximizing low end torque would have been cheaper / easier with a 351-based engine, or, a stroked 351-based engine.

What type of engine controls do you plan to run? Stock ECM? At a minimum it will need a tune if you want it to run well with the stroked 347 and aftermarket cam. Some of the truck ECM's are not common to use with an aftermarket tune. Many use a ECM from a mass air Mustang as it is more familiar to the tuner.. Of course, due to the fact that these are so old now there aren't as many tuners to tune this era of computer. There are aftermarket engine controllers such as MegaSquirt that can be custom tuned by yourself or a pro. Plan for the cost of this if needed.

The suggestion above of a custom cam for this particular combination is excellent advice.

Not meaning to rain on the parade. The thread title asked for our thoughts.

Good luck!
Jonathan

Thank you for the response. Here is specifics:

Mass air using factory ECM
GT40 heads
4.10 gears
56 mm TB
LT headers
4R70 trans
Stock converter
Truck has a tune that will be modified

I know I will need larger injectors. After further research I’m looking at 35-510-8 cam. Truck will be a every day driver and will never see the track.

I'm a fan of the GT40's & GT40P's on 302 ci engines for cheap improvements using factory quality parts. They will be a choke point on your 347. Those heads, your stock intake, and stock convertor would be better served with the lower rpm cam that you suggested vs the one the builder is recommending.

24lb injectors from another Ford product of the '90's era should be sufficient for your new power levels.

Post some pictures and results when you are finished.
