Body Mounts
Anyone have any advise on replacing the body mount (bushings) on a 1994 f150 4x4? Looks pretty straight forward, but I imagine its not as easy as you would think? especially after 18 years, things tend to not want to come apart. They actually dont "look" bad, but what is happening, is when I accelerate from a stop, especially on a cold morning, I get some (for lack of a better word) Popping sound from underneath somewhere. All the u-joints, tie rod ends etc.. have recently been replaced, and it doesnt sound like that, sounds like something is popping due to flex somewhere under acceleration. Also, hitting bumps seems more harsh sounding that it used to be. (shocks have been replaced as well). Im not sure its the mounts or bushings, but it makes sense to me. Anyone else have any ideas? and its not a continuous popping, just 1 or 2 pops, and thats it. Really dont think its in the drive-train anywhere, to me it seems like something is ever so slightly moving or something.

ok, well mine is a 4x4... I just was underneath it putting on a new parking brake equalizer, anyway, got to pushing around on stuff, to see if anything was loose, making the noise we were talking about...I found what mine was...there is a cross member that is under the transfer case/transmission... has 2 bolts that hold the support for the transfer case (best description I can come up with right now) anyway, I could turn the two nuts on the bolts by hand! and I could push it around by hand, it wouldnt move much, but just a tiny bit. so I pulled it into my shop, got under it again, tightened those up, and no more popping sound! quiet as could be. it must have been that way a long time, at least I have been hearing the noise for a long time, doesnt appear to have hurt anything, but pretty sure those nuts were supposed to be tight. I also went around under it checking for other loose bolts/nuts...didnt find any, test drove, and quiet as could be. I just put new brakes and rotors on a couple weeks ago along with new steering linkage, adjusted the steering box this morning... had a lot of play, the linkage replacement really helped, but adjusting the box topped it off, steers like new now, stops smooth as could be, and no more popping around underneath! Seems like a new truck! LOL
Mine does that too part of it was the crossmember but I replaced the transmission mount and tightend all the bolts on the crossmember too did help but still have the sound I agree that it could be the body mounts plan on changing mine soon as well. But it could also be wheel bearings or radial arm bushings or even the ball joints
