Banging in the Transfer Case/Differental
Hey...
Looking to help a friend diagnose and fix his F-150. I've never worked on a truck, only older Audis... hence the name. I'm know my way around most things with cars so just looking for some insight as to whats going on.
The truck bangs when put into drive and bangs even louder when louder when it is put in reverse. I was on the ground looking at the drive shaft while my buddy put the truck into drive and then reverse. When the banging occurs the drive shaft spins about a quarter turn and bangs to a stop once actually in gear.
Would this be a problem with the u-joints or a transmission related problem?
Truck is a '95 f-150, regular cab, Auto w/ 4WD. Transmission is stamped BorgWarner Automotive 13-56-039-910 and the part attached to the drive shaft coming from the tranny is stamped by the same company with a number or 13-56-066-909.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Try this -
put some kind of wedge in your front wheels so the truck will not roll. put it in neutral with the emergency brake out. slide under and grab the drive shaft (DS) and rattle it you will be able to tell if it is a UJ and which one is bad. I don't know what year you have and if you have the DS with a center carrier bearing, My advice to you is because UJ's are so cheap, about $10 bucks each, if it turns out to be a bad UJ replace the other(s) as well. You are going the have the DS out to do the job so it is a good time to replace the other UJ.
