If your a beginner then take it to a shop. Also be ready to get an alignment that could cost extra if shims are needed. Its not easy and its not cheap. Ford bit the big one on the front end ball joints, if u ask me. Never seen any other ball joints that where as nerve racking. This is all assuming that they are just like the ones I changed on my 91 f150. Press in type's that you have to drop the spindles and put on a vice?

Not trying to turn you off from doing it yourself but I would have let mine break off before changing them again and I am a full service tech. Fords the best at getting dealers money for stuff like this. Best bet is to sell it lol.

is it 4wd? if not it's a much less complicated job. But there's still a ton of elbow grease required. you'll want to make sure you have on hand a BFH, a ball joint press, a sturdy breaker bar, some scrap pieces of wood, and the standard sockets and wrenches if you want to do this yourself. I did mine with no prior auto repair experience using a Chilton's manual and some advice from this forum. Good luck!

If you have a Ford Van, it's an E-150.

Are you talking about replacing the Tie Rods on you 4x2 van?

You may need to replace a both of them while you are at it.

Yes, you can just replace the ballstuds on the tie-rods.

or

Purchase both new tie rods with the ballstuds already on them.

If you buy both tie rods and ball joints;
MEASURE the length of the old tie rods/ball joints when you get them off in one piece.

Install the Tie-rod Ballstud and Adjusting Sleeve to the Tie Rod if not already screwed on, ensure the length is the same as the old tie rods with ballstuds.

Install the other Tie-rod Ballstud and Adjusting Sleeve to the Drag Link if not already screwed on, ensure the length is the same as the old drag link with ballstud is.

FYI -
Drag Link
is the name of the other tie rod connected to the passenger side.
Ballstud is another name for ball joint.

This is how I have always installed tie rods on my 4WD and 2WD trucks
without
having to get my front-end realigned.

I know it costs more to purchase all new tie rods and the ball joints...

Remove the cotter pin and nut from the pitman arm and smack/hit the side of the pitman arm several times with the hammer and the ball joint should just fall out!
You really have to hit it hard!
Keep hitting the side of the pitman arm, you will not hurt it.

After you reinstall the tie rods,
ensure the cotter pin is through the hole properly below the nut on the pitman arm,
this is very important,
if not; the nut will vibrate off later on and steering will be lost!

My 2¢
