Did you see what your voltmeter was reading during this time? Wondering if the regulator didn't fritz out??
Thinking either you had a serious overvoltage event (regulator), or a serious overcurrent event (short).
The alternator can supply a fair amount of current - for it to catch fire suggests a problem that will hopefully be easy to identify. Suggest to inspect the larger (+) wires for any insulation damage or other inadvertent grounding, and the smaller (+) wires for melted insulation - your radio leads would be a good place to start - did something in the radio circuit short out?
Not sure why the radio fuse didn't blow - was it the right size and type(voltage)?
