Default bad fuel pump

I have a 1996 5.0L f150 with 280k miles. Today I was running errands when truck refused to start. After trying some things I switched tanks and truck fired right up. Seems like I have a bad pump. Will I have to drop tank to change pump. If so should I change sending unit too.

You will have to drop the tank, straps should be replaced, sending unit should be fine. With purchase of pump and straps you may want to take a look at you tank before hand, if it's looking a little worse for the wear then you should consider just getting a new tank/pump, it comes pre-assembled and includes tank straps. Ordered online the whole assembly will be less than what the pump would cost you at an auto parts store.

rockauto.com, that will give you a part number as well (for the tank size and placement) then it would be wise to check amazon (they have free shipping for over $35 when you buy from them or there "partners") as well as google the part #.

If you end up going with rockauto here is a 5% discount code, enter it in the how did you hear about us line. They send me a new one every month, it can be used multiple times so anyone can use it that wants it.

Check your dash switch. They mess up sometimes.

Thanks for your help. After much consideration decided not to fix. Never really needed two tanks anyway. 280k out of one pump not bad. Although it could be swith. I can hear the motor turn off and on a couple times then dies. It sounds weaker than rear tank pump. Also will not crank when frwd selected. So pretty sure its the pump. Besides don't I have to take dash out to check switch?

Just the plastic around the cluster, two bolts under the snap in trim pieces, if auto you will have to drop the gear selector down to D or below, you will also need something (small flat screwdriver) to lift the tab inside the light pull-**** to remove it before you can take the surround off, then just pull the black plastic cluster surround off.

After much consideration, I have decided not to fix fuel pump. Never really used second tank. Use to run gas thru it because I was afraid gas would sour. Second tank was more of a nuisance.
But thanks every one for your help.
