Default Autotranny

I have a super clean 92 F150, 4x4, 351, auto, and about 103K on the clock. The problem is that after the truck sits for about a week, it shifts really hard, like it has a shift kit (don't know if it does). Now, I know it has the 20 bolt tranny, and serviced it myself about 2 months ago. The fluid was dark but no shinny flakes. Then after the truck warms up it goes away and shifts smooth...any help or suggestions would nice. Also, Great Site...

Unfortunately, that's the nature (to my limited knowledge) of these e40d transmissions. Had a 'Ford Guy' tell me the lock-ups tend to go bad. Once it starts, it's my understanding that the end is near 5-10k.

I was also told, and please correct me if I'm wrong guys, that driving with the issue won't destroy the 'transmission' per se, but the lockup will eventually seize up b/w the torque converter...

Pull the codes.

Next, put some trans-tune in it for a tank or two of gas, then do another drain and fill on the tranny... I've got the kit to do my second round with a fully synthetic ATF, but haven't found the time. Also, I forget where I read / heard it (probably on here b/c it is a great forum) but I heard that the e40d will start shifting really smoothly when it's about to go. The reason I think I can relate to you micboo is that mine started about 4mos ago and would only happen when I had to hit Reverse first thing in the morning - so I started backing in the driveway at night.

Hillbille...thanks for the info. Yes, I was talking to my local Ford "old" guy and he said I could have it rebuilt for around 600.00 in my area. Might have to do that...I love this truck and will keep no matter what. When I did my service I did put a little transtune in the tranny. Then it started with this...The motor is running fine, stuck a couple hundred tuning it up and all the plugs look really good, no issues there. Anyway, thanks again.

Funny, it's ironic, I got the same price which makes me think our 'tranny mechanics' are just going to pull the TC and put a new lockup in. I'm going to ask mine to put new clutches in and replace the seals while it's dropped (although I'd never know if he actually does the clutches). good luck

See, this is why information is power...and you are right, unless we stand over top of them, how do we know? Thanks again...and that is why I love my other truck...1964 F100, hell you can fix that truck with a screwdriver and hammer!!!

i know exactly what you mean. we had a 1973 F-100 and it was always fixed with a hammer, screwdriver, and ducktape.
