Default Automatic transmission selector not fully engaging

Hey All,
I have a 1988 F150 with an automatic transmission and I was curious on how to go about fixing an issue with the automatic transmission selector. The issue is that the selector on the steering column is not fully engaging into the stops. The orange indicator is slightly to the left of the gear it should be in when it stops. The previous owner said he had to "fix" the lock cylinder so I am not completely sure the route he took to do that. Any pointers on this before I pull the steering wheel would be great, thanks in advance.

Sounds like you need to adjust the indicator ( Orange arrow ). You need to remove the steering wheel and column cover. It's operated by a small cable screwed to the shifter. Just loosen the screw, line up the arrow and tighten. Then put the column back together.

Are you saying the shift lever notches are off or just the pointer? 2 different problems. The notches that you feel are actually in the transmission itself.

The pointer is connected to a very small diameter cable. Like a bicycle brake cable. The cable has a plastic sheath that on my truck has gotten brittle over the years and has broken in several places along the length. If that's the case it will be difficult or impossible to adjust.

Thanks Warlockk and klricks, I'll go ahead and pull the steering wheel and cover and try to adjust the cable, I'll inspect the cable for any cracks. It sounds like if I can adjust the arrow then the stops are probably fine. Much appreciated!

had this problem on an old truck before, cable was shot, spiderwire fishing line works like a charm.

I'm hoping it isn't that bad... hopefully. Though you gave me a great idea on how to fix my seat release.
