Default Another Broken Speedometer

I just got a new-to-me 1991 F150 XLT 302 EFI, automatic. My speedometer is broken, and points straight down at the 6 o'clock postion, way below the 0 mph position. The tachometer works just fine. I also have a problem with very rough shift from 1st gear to 2nd. Where should I start to diagnose this?
Thanks,
Chad

That's not enough information, and it all needs to be in your signature as this caption explains:

You can try disassembling the instrument cluster & re-stabbing the needle onto its shaft, but you'll probably end up just swapping in a junkyard speedometer.

Depends which automatic the truck has - that's why you need to read that first caption, and fill in your signature.

Tried to fill in sig as best I could. Definitely an E4OD automatic transmission, and hard shifting is still a problem. Appreciate any advice.

We know that an E4OD is an automatic and that all '88-up F150s are EFI, so use that space in your sig for things we don't know, like MILES, maintenance, mods, damage, repairs, each factory option...

What fluid is in the trans, and how old (time, miles) is it? What color is it and how does it smell, compared to a new bottle of MotorCraft Mercon? How old is the filter? Does it have an external filter in the cooler loop? Follow the links in these captions & the NEXT few from each one:
