Aligning Transmission onto Engine
well, i got the new clutch in, but now i'm having a hell of a time getting the transmission back on. i'm basically trying to use two car jacks, front and back, to get the thing to line up. my next idea is to get two really long bolts that will slide through two of the mounting holes to get everything where it's supposed to be. i'm sure if i had the RIGHT tools (transmission jack) this would all be a lot easier, but i don't....
anyone have any tricks up their sleeve?

go ahead bolt up the cross member rest the back of the tranz on the then raise the motor a little with a jack and slide the transmission up to it. it might take a little while to get the aligning just right but thats what i had to do with my 96 f150 and this girls 87 k5
More likely than not the disc is not lined up with the pilot bearing, if an alignment tool wasn't used, suggest buying a gypo type and go at it again. Previous idea to help hold the tranny up with the crossmember sound like strong advise.
i tried this method, worked great...until it got to about 1/2" away from being mounted. i'm definitely getting through the clutch plate, lining up the splines wasn't too bad. i can't tell if i'm just not getting the transmission shaft to seat inside the pilot bearing or what. i pulled the transmission back once to try the alignment tool again, and it slid right in. it also looks like the throw out bearing is touching the fingers on the pressure plate, and it was also pretty stiff when i put it on the slave cylinder. that shouldn't cause a problem, should it? god this is getting frustrating...

well actually that's wrong. i called a local transmission shop and they told me that it's completely normal. i bought a new slave cylinder just 'cause i was in there, and it did the same thing. i just had to start the bolts and it sucked itself in. it's all back together now and it works fantastic. thanks for all the other tips!
