Default AC issues

Although i don't use my ac all the time i would like to be able to use it if i need to. When i turn in my ac and the compressor engages the rpm drops and sometimes stalls the motor. Is there a sensor that should keep the motor operating at the correct rpm

It sounds like your compressor is seized. Pull the belt off and grab the center and try turning it by hand. You should be able to turn it easily.

Unfortunately i haven't had time to diagnosis the compressor yet. I'm gonna guess that's the problem cause when it engages it make a very loud noise. Maybe this weekend I'll check it.

The proper way is to reclaim the refrigerant. So empty it somehow. Then remove the lines and pull the pump. Replace it with a new one. Install new o rings and the recommended amount of oil. Check the orifice tube. Often it is blocked with pieces of the compressor when it fails. It can be replaced for less than $10. Personally I recommended replacing the receiver too. It has a drying agent in it that wears out and it only cost about $25. Then you need to draw a vacuum for 20 min to remove air and moisture. Hook up a set of gauges and charge to the recommended amount. You can pick up gauges from harbor freight or I think you can rent them.

Its not all that hard but if you are unsure you can replace the compressor then take it to a shop to be recharged. It does take a few tools to do it right and it may not be worthwhile to do it one time.

Would recharging it help the compressor? When it engages it makes like a whining noise and puts such a load on the motor it stalls it. But it still turns by hand.
