Default '96 f-150 gas cap code

I'm thinking about purchasing a 1996 F-150 from a friend. It's giving off the code for a loose gas cap, but they can't seem to fix it. It passed inspection with the code, but it still makes me nervous. They said they think it's something with the gas line and the vacuum seal. Is that a major problem? Thanks in advance.

So the code for that usually comes up small evap leak detected or large leak. If new gas caps don't fix it then it's a leak somewhere in fuel or fuel return system. When you think of what that includes it can be hard to pinpoint and could be as simple as broken line or bad gas tank. That entire system must hold pressure.

Okay. Thanks for the help. I don't know much when it comes to vehicles. So a gas line replacement is simple? Is that something I can do myself or needs to be taken into a shop?

Take it to a shop for dyagnosis, they'll do a smoke test. Problem can be from simple to complex to repair.
