Default 94 e40d troubles

just bought truck with tranny problems (e40d), intended to replace it, but now i am looking for suggestions. sometimes reverse does not engage but has a light grinding while trying, can put it in low-lock and engage reverse. also when driving hard shift upon engageing passing gear, AND when i remove foot from accelerator and rpms come down i here a rattleing (definately) in tranny i can press accelerator to get rpms up and noise stops, and while any of these things occur, the in-dash voltmeter jumps frantically. is it hard-part or computor? should i rebuild or replace? if i rebuild how can i improve it? if i replace, is there a better tranny that whill mate to my 302? thanks for your input.

Start with scanning codes, might need a solenoid pack which is fairly easy

found it, forgot to mention bolt pattern. it is a C6 mated to a 351 HO. is it possible to mate that C6 to my 302 with a e40d?
