Default 93 transmission problems

my truck is a 93, 5.0 extended cab 2wd. I believed the transmission is an AOD. It's a 4 speed, with a kick down cable, NO button on the gear lever to turn off the OD. The label on the door jam has a transmission code of T and the truck has 139K.

The problem is reverse. Sometimes reverse will engage slowly and when it does, the engine will rev and it feels like a band is chattering.

It's only happened once now, most times it functions 100% normally.

I've checked the fluid, it's not burnt, not black but not clean red either. It's at a normal level. I can see there is a couple of drops of fluid leaking from the rear seal of the trans where the drive shaft connects. It seems to be the ONLY oil leak under the truck.

I was thinking about dropping the pan, replacing the fluid and filter and replacing the rear seal.

Beyond that I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to what might cause it or any other maintenance I should do?

thanks
Jeff
