Default 5 qts. or 6

I bought a 1996 ford F150 with the 4.9 inline 6 cylinder a few weeks back and was told the oil had just been changed. From the looks of the oil, I'm sure it was, but the dip stick showed to be about a quart over full. Instead of trying to drain a qt. out, I just changed the the oil and filter again. The owners manual I found online and the Chilton manual states that it takes 6 qts. per change with new filter. Imagine my surprise when it again showed `to be over full! Could it have the wrong dip stick? ( part F1TE-6750-BA ) Does anyone else have this problem? And is this something I should be concerned about? Thank all of you in advance!

I did my oil change I think it was 6qts will oil filter

Its 5qt to fill the pan and 1qt extra for the filter

Did you run the engine after changing the oil?

Neither of those are the 4.9 (300 cid) inline 6, which I'm asking about the engine oil capacity.

just giving advice take it or leave it, all the I6s iv owned also only had 5 quarts, only reason they would take more is if they had a larger oil pan.

6 quarts! Factory pan. Probably the wrong dip stick.

Page 435 of the owner's manual! Crankcase capacity 5qts. Note #3 at the bottom of the page, "Add 1qt for filter change". They taught us in school that 5+1=6

Jonblue - Food for thought............if the anti-drain back valve is not working in the oil filter or non-existent, then that one quart in the filter can drain back into the pan showing it to be one quart over full. I had to switch to Motorcraft filters since the Fram filters' anti-drain back valve consistently failed. No problem since switching to Motorcraft.

i go by the dip stick. 6 quarts woulda put them all well over the full mark. but those are in the 3 4.9s iv owned/had to change the oil in. not saying your wrong, iv just never needed 6.
