Default 4x4 Problem

I have a 1996 F150 Eddie Bauer 4x4, with lock-out hubs, the truck operates fine in 2wd but when I lock the hubs it completely stops the front axle from turning, my rear wheels will spin but front just doesnt move at all. Some friends suggested possible differential or hub systems, but i dont know. Anyone experience any of this, or know how to fix, help would be appreciated

When I test drove my truck before I bought it, it had auto locking hubs. I threw it in 4x4 at the end of the drive, drove it around in a dirt circle for 10 seconds, acknowledged that it indeed had working 4x4 and went back to 2-hi. When I went to turn into the guys driveway, the front hubs were stuck in the lock position (yes, they are auto hubs and were sticky) and it prevented me from moving. It would only let me go straight.

I bought the truck, swapped the hubs and never had the problem again.

Moral: I don't know what your problem is, or mine was really, but a hub swap helped me. Will it help you? I'd try to figure it out a little more before I spent the money on the hubs. The only reason I did my hub swap right away was because he gave me a set of manual hubs when I bought it.

My Auto Lockers are nice and easy to move, replaced them not long ago, im thinking it has to be something to do with the diff, dont really know to much about them tho, it started humming and bang im spotted in traffic had to get out and free the lock-outs and then i could move but. Any way to check diff oil levels? or how to fill? Thanks for the help
