Default 4x4 low help

i recently bought a 1996 f150, it has the straight 6 with a manual trans and a manual transfer case. i can engage 4 high with no problems but i cannot get the truck into neutral or 4 low. the shift lever and the owners manual says to push down however i cannot get it to work. any help would be appreciated.

There is a thing on the bottom of the shifter, a round cylinder thing, spray some crc or wd40 and loosen it up, try to push it down, if it does not work, spray some more, the thing is probably a little seized.

The part that the shifter **** goes into that is connected to the transfer case is seized up. Mine is like that now. I have to take it off and soak it in some oil and hope it helps. I know that is my problem. Hopefully yours is too!

Give it a reverse drop at 60 MPH and at the same time stuff it into 4H.
no not really, you just have to put the wd40 or some sort of penetrant to it...

turn off the truck with the trans in N. then it should be easier to engage.
