Default 4x4 issues

So been having a prob with my 4x4 lately.
I use it almost everyday to get up my slippery driveway and it always engages and disengages fine.
But if i drive it for a length of say 20 meters the 4 wheel just stops working and the truck slips into what feels like neutral. Keep in mind that the lever doesnt actually moves into neutral or the shifter. The vehicle is still in drive but just revs.
When it does this I get a big clunk when putting it back into 2 wheel....
Any ideas? Suggestions on where to start?

First thought is that your shift linkage is out of adjustment and it's not fully engaging 4wd.
