Default egr tube

Hey guys, I've tried searching the internet for something specific and have also bought a haynes manual to see but No luck. When my trucks running and since it's winter here with the Hood open I can see lots of exhaust smoke coming up from behind the engine. It makes inside the cab smell too. It was up on a hoist and the mechanic saw the small tube connecting to the exhaust under the passenger door was broken off. Also saw up by a valve or something behind the engine there was a leak there too. Is that the egr tube? If so can I delete the egr? I don't need it for emissions up Here for safety. If it's not the egr tube, What's behind the engine that runs down to the exhaust? Thanks

That's the smog pump line. Any exhaust shop can fix it.

Like Sean said smog pump tube technically the Secondary Air Injection system. It pumps air to the Cat at cold start to warm it up to get it working. There is a check valve to keep exhaust from going back up the like but if you broke the line you now have an exhaust leak. My issue is you shouldn't be able to see the exhaust most of the time. It should look just like what comes out of the tailpipe. The rule of diagnostics is to fix the known problem first so have that tube welded up then recheck for smoke. Should be a cheap fix. As far as the EGR first that's a separate system. Second its not a great idea to remove it. It reduces emissions, detonation and allows for leaner fuel mix to increase mpg without hurting power on demand. There are good reasons for all these parts. Make sure you know what they are and how they work before you remove anything. BTW, smart move picking up a manual. I've been a trained tech for years and I use them all the time. Look up secondary air. Its in there.

It's cold up in Canada so I'm able to see where the smoke comes from which is pretty handy at the moment. This smog line, is there a part number for it? Does it run from the egr under the upper intake to the valve you mentioned then down to the cat? Just trying to get specifics. Removing the egr was only a question, I'll ask lots before doing things I'm unsure of such as this. If I can order the part I'll do it without issues and replace that tube. I'd love having No loud exhaust and the smell lol. The part that connects to the cat, is that bolted in or? Thanks again guys!! Much appreciated. My unit is the 88 2wd 5.0

When I ordered a new one from RockAuto they listed it as an "AIR intake tube" IIRC...

I think it's a friction fit that becomes seized over the years, with a small clamp holding it on. I broke mine off trying to remove it to fit my headers.

It runs from the air pump through the 3way valve. The air pump is below the alternator on the drive belt. What engine do you have?

I have the 302 5.0 the egr is up front just on the passenger side of the upper manifold. The pipe that comes from the egr that goes behind the engine I'm told is leaking exhaust .

Two lines come from the backs of each cylinder head, then merge together and runs to the exhaust.

Those are the A.I.R. injection lines. They bolt to the back of the heads. The EGR line is the little stove looking thing bolted to the side of the throttle body. It takes exhaust gas from a port in the lower intake manifold and injects it at the your intake just behind the throttle body.

You can run without the EGR tube, but it will throw codes and play some havoc with the EEC in my experience. The tube isn't too hard to replace, a new one runs about $50, a junkyard one for a small fraction of that. Takes about 45 minutes or so to change.
