Yes, I know it's damn near impossible to get the pan out and that you have to lift the motor. I can't find a local shop that'll just drop the pan and let it rest on the cross member while they clean it up and install the new gasket. But, does $400 sound right for labor and material?

This kinda just happened to me when I got a new timing chain. Mechanic said "hey, you got a metal oil pan gasket". He was bumming. He said he searched the forums, and asked other mechanics and said yep, you got to lift the motor out.
Or drop it 1/2" or 3/4" and McGuyver the gasket onto it with that much space. He said the cross member is just way too long to remove to drop the pan.
So what he did was use a reciprocating saw (the kind they use on surgical casts) and cut the the gasket part off under the timing chain.
He said it would have costs me quite a bit to lift the motor out to do that pan.
