Default 4.9L head question!!!

hey i have a 1996 f 150 with a straight 6 4.9l the head is cracked and im trying to find another one and aperently i have to get a 1996 head because they are differnt, because the air pump goes to the head instead of the intake mani... is this true or can i get another head from a early year motor???

Does yours have a big cast alluminum thing on top that says ford? I have a 1992 4.9L I6 and it has a air box on the side of the truck and then from there it goes to the mass air flow sensor and then to the intake... If you want to see what im talking about go to my garage and look at Old Laster and go to engine and you'll see it. If you have any more quesions pm me and ill send u my cell # and ill go step by step for you.

ahhh not quite what im talking about... your talking about your air box/filter... im talking about the air pump ( its underneath of the altenator). i was told that the earlier EFI heads are differnt from the 96 efi head. What i was told was the differnce was that the air pump in the eairler models went to the intake manifold, and mine sence its a 96 went right to the head. i just want to know if i can put an earlier efi head (off of a 93) on to my 96 block and will it work?

All heads with Smog had the AIR in the head...good luck finding a good used core but if you want to buy one new check out Engine Quest...they have them and they are better than the factory

finding a used head isnt the issue...finding one without cracks is...they are very crack prone as they are thin wall castings...
