In my opinion, I'd get the 5.0. I have a 5.0 2wd with 3.08 gears and quite a few mods to the engine. It has 139,000 miles and runs like it's brand new. My truck has out ran, out pulled, and out missed anything it's been against, and keep in mind its a 17 year old truck. I'm not knocking on the 4.9, I've just never owned one. My truck has done everything I've asked of it, and more. It hasn't let me down yet and I don't think she plans on it. As for mechanics, I've done every mod to my truck myself. It's not hard at all. And ontop of all that I get about 18mpg

out mudded everything with your 2x4 huh?? lol

but anyways i'm a fan of the 4.9l i wouldnt own anything else in a truck.

it will pull anything you can think of hooking up to the bumper(ie: stumps, logs, 5.utoh's)

and i've had them with 4speeds 5 speeds C6 autos and E4OD autos. and never had any problems with any of them. the 5speed and the E40d were a little nicer on the highway for the overdrives. but i wouldnt trade my 4speed granny low for anything.

all the power for the 4.9l is right off idle so your not reving up the engine to get to the power it is just there. and it has a nice flat torque range.

I have a 4.9 too and I can't complain about it. I don't haul much in the bed, but I tow cars with it all too often. The other day I towed my Ranger, and it drove like there was nothing being dragged behind it. It's no race car, but neither is the 5.0 in a heavy 4x4. I like the 4.9 for its simplicity and it is very easy to work on, being a straight six there's plenty of room.

id do 5.0. but i like the v8 sound. inmy opinion there is no way to make a 6 cylinder sound nearly as good as a v8. when a 302 is sittin next to you in traffic with a louad exhaust.. you know its a v8. when a loud six cylinder is next to you. all you really know is it sounds like turd

Personally im a fan of the 5.0 myself. I've owned 2 i6's and cooked thm both. Thy both had heating issues and it didn't matter Wht I did or replaced thy still cooked.
The first one I ended up buying a jasper 302 bored .40 over from a friend with 19k on it, the wiring harness was fried so I converted it to carb. I put a ton of mods on it before I put it in. Cam, high rise intake, edelbrock carb, long tube headers, true duals with no cats and turbo mufflers, hei distributor, high flow fuel pump and so on... and it was the best motor I've ever ran. Had a ton of power and for a full size truck was extremely quick and had amazing throttle response.
I don't think ill ever own another 4.9 personally

how did you "cook them"? i do notice that my L6 gets hot while driving in the city but a simple e fan would fix
that. the engines can and have lasted longer then 300,000 miles mine is at 135,000 and still going strong. if you keep int well maintaned it will last you an easy 300,000 miles with out rebuilding it.

No idea. Thy both kept overheating no matter Wht I did. I changed everything imaginable and Nothin worked. It would be ok as long as I drove in a straight line at a steady speed.. as soon as I hit a mountain rode with an incline it would shoot up and overheat before the top.
The other one overheated sitting at a red light. So no longer a fan of thm myself

I would go with the 4.9 because they will out last the 5.0 buy a long shot and they are a work horse

strange it sounds like the clutch was slipping or just not getting the power to the road. any matter i was a fan of the 302s until i bought my L6.
