2wd locker/LS question

Ford junky
Search eBay for a mini spool for the 31 spline for the 8.8. Steps you will take, remove cover, remove end caps, remove cross pin, slide axles out after removing c clips, remove spiders, install mini spool inside the carrier, put axles and c clips in, install cross pin, re torque end caps. Cover and fill. You might be able to install the mini spool in the carrier without taking it out from the axle.
*word of caution, you now have full posi. Your turning radius will be larger and you may get some wheel squeal on the road turning corners since the rear tires can not spin at different speeds now.*

I installed a Ford racing limited slip. The complete rebuild with all new bearings, carrier, and ring an pinion cost about $800 from summit. Mine was thrashed. From what I've seen of your work you should be able to handle it. Just get some good directions and take it a step at a time. You need a press. The manual puller, press tools are junk. As for performance, its great on the streets and in the wet. Does just fine in the dirt and medium trails. It's better than open on snow and ice but I think you'd get more out of a locker. I've had some spin in snow. With some chains on however I haven't been stuck yet. Having no winch or 4 wd I don't push it too far but its pretty good.

I just picked up a pretty major landscape job that should last me until winter and get some play money flowing. It'll take me a few weeks to get things lined up, but I'll probably end up with a salvage yard rear end and overhauling it before swapping it into my 95. I appreciate the help and vote of confidense. At least withe salvage yard diff I can learne how to work on it and not get stranded.

The easiest thing to do is just get a locker....
Loc-Rite is the way to go or a similar locker... it takes the place of the weaker LS clutch style system and is an actual locker...
it takes a little different driving skill with a locker and if you dont it can chew tires easily on pavement...
A locker will actually lock both tires like a spool and make them solid with NO chance of slipping... the downfall is turning... on curves you need to let off the gas so it unlocks...
Some lockers will auto do this in turns and others will stay locked until you physically let off the gas... they will lock once force is applied and apply that force to BOTH wheels...
Most lockers install in about 20 minutes... you pull the pin and spiders and replace with the locker... no disassemble of the ring or pinion required... Simple, fast and effective.
I had lockers front and rear in my 78 GM 4x4 and I never had any issues and I drove it every where for almost 8 years on the same set of 38s

I installed an Aussie locker in mine. Took me a bit more then 20 minutes, but I like to goof around and examine things so it always takes me longer. It cost right at $300 and can be done with medium mechanical ability. Driving style changes a bit. I coast around corners even though its not necessary and the locker can be noisey when it unwinds.

I'll look into the locker. The only problem with the locker is my backroads trips to work. Lot's and lots of sharp curves and corners and when we get an ice storm, there's realy no chance of me calling into work on the ambulance. I was looking at an auto locker which may be better for my needs.

With the selectable you have the best of both worlds. The downside is the locker cost 200-300 more and unless you can set up the gear, someone going to want 250 for that. (Ymmv). How many times a year do you see yourself driving on the ice vs a degraded road. If its not many but once or twice a person can figure how to drive a locker on ice and get by. If its going to be every day then your rolling the dice not in your favor.

We don't get allot of ice, but one or twice a year, we get a good ice storm that lingers on the back roads and interstate exit ramps. I've never figured out why they spend millions to de-ice the interstate and leave the exit ramps covered in ice and the non-interstate highways stay iced over for a week or more. I guess they'd rather the wrecks happen off of the interstate. Slowing from 70mph to a 25mph 180 degree exit ramp sucks when it's iced over!
