Default 1990 F150 headlights

when i switch the brights on one is bright one is dim when i switch back to dim the bright one goes dim the dim goes bright,shouldn't both be bright or dim at the same time?

Sounds like you have the low and high wire swapped, corroded terminal or the aim on one of them is very low.

The ground wire for the dim headlight is disconnected or broken. In LOW beam, the current flows back through the high filament, which is large enough to carry the current without much resistance. But in HI, it can't flow through the LOW filament enough to light the HI filament, so both filaments burn dim. It's very common for the wires to flex until they break right at the back of the headlight connector, so I'd look there first. If it's the passenger headlight that's dim, it might be from battery acid corroding the wires. In any case, replacement bulb pigtails are available from parts stores, Amazon, eBay, etc (called WPT-110 by Ford).
