Default 1989 transfer case or front end problem

When I lock my hubs whether or not I put it into four wheel drive there is a pop like sound and kind of a chug. It does it louder and harder when in four wheel drive. I started to notice it this fall a couple weeks after goin muddin and forgot to unlock my hubs. Any ideas?

Could be a couple things may be close to a striped out locker or a couple teeth gone on your front diff... I had a 91 fullsize bronco that started out with small poping sounds when i locked it in 4 wheel and got to be extremly loud poping and grinding noise and the front would go in and out on pulling i thought forsure the front diff was busted but it ended up eing my driver side locker striped.. and my dad put one out of a k5 blazer in it and never had problems again.. but id try to find exactly where the sounds coming from first
